For those who are curious, here are the details on the case I was supposed to serve on. The defendant was Xavier Mille. More glad than ever that I didn't have to serve on this, and that the guy is going to jail.

Tuesday, December 07, 2004 - CAMBRIDGE A 24-year-old Lawrence man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for his part in the slaying of a Plymouth man in Lowell two years ago in a deal over $25,000 worth of the drug ecstasy.
Javish Marrero pleaded guilty yesterday to a lesser charge just before he was to go on trial in Middlesex Superior Court for the Jan. 19, 2002, shooting death of Sovanna Chittaphong, 29, outside a Lowell Highlands apartment.
At a hearing scheduled for Thursday, Marrero will be sentenced to the mandatory sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years.
Jury selection will begin today for co-defendant Xavier Mille, 22, also of Lawrence, the alleged shooter. A third man, Alexis Beamud, 21, also of Lawrence, will be tried separately because he allegedly made incriminating statements to police about his co-defendants.
Prosecutor Lee Hettinger alleges that Beamud set up a meeting, through a middleman, with Chittaphong in a deal to sell him 5,000 ecstasy pills for $25,000.
The deal was to take place inside the middle man's second-floor apartment at 68 Powell St., Lowell. But Hettinger said there were never any drugs. The plan from the start was to rob the victim and his friend.
Initially the deal was to take place in Methuen, but Beamud and his friends were late, so Chittaphong and his friend went back to Lowell to watch the Patriots game, Hettinger said.
After arriving at the apartment building, Beamud and Chittaphong began to argue over who should show their goods first. Chittaphong indicated the money could be brought to the apartment while Beamud went down the car to retrieve his friends.
As the group went back up the stairs, Marrero used the sawed-off shotgun to strike the middle man in the head, Hettinger said. He was able to escape to a nearby bathroom and lock himself inside, according to the prosecutor.
At the same time, Chittaphong ran down the stairs and out the door. He was trying to run along a snow-covered Powell Street when he slipped and fell.
Chittaphong was screaming, "No, don't shoot me, don't shoot me,'' as Mille raised the .44-caliber handgun and pointed it at him, Hettinger alleges. Mille allegedly told Chittaphong, "Don't move,'' then pulled the trigger.
Chittaphong was shot once in the back but continued to run away before falling down fatally wounded.
Lowell Police found Chittaphong lying in the blood-stained snow at Powell and Smith streets around 8:30 p.m. He died an hour later at Lowell General Hospital.
The middle man later identified Beamud from police mugshots. Numerous witnesses at the scene also identified the three suspects after viewing the police photos, Hettinger said.
