I'm starting to think about a trip to the UK this winter for a friend's wedding in London. I just called my travel agent to start looking around, which turns out to be handy because she's retiring and the office is closing tomorrow! She says that airfare around the holidays gets expensive and sells out quickly, so I really should book now. She found me a flight from Boston to Scotland, then home from London, for about $600, then $162 for the train to get from Scotland to London. Then, of course, I still have to figure out where to stay and how much that will cost. I hate having to make decisions involving large amount of money by myself, and I'm a little nervous about committing so far in advance. Is Scotland the right place to go? I've been to London before and loved it, but I want to go someplace new. Any opinions? Someone tell me to just go ahead and do it!

I think so -- Corky at Garber Travel. That branch in Cambridge is closing, sadly, and she's retiring to spend more time with her grandchildren.

Do it!! Edinburgh is my favorite city in the whole world - if you'd like to chat about why, maybe we can do that next time we're both at the theater. But yeah - oh man do I wish I could afford to go back! :)

I'd love to hear all about it -- I don't know anything about Edinburgh, I just want to go to Scotland and that was suggested to me as a good city for someone who doesn't drive.

Edinburgh is a wonderful, beautiful, wonderful city. I took the train from London to Edinburgh last time I went, and when I got off the train, I started tearing up because it was so beautiful. Go for it!

I second the comments above: Edinburgh really is great. I think it gets kind of cold in the winter, though, so take all your warm clothes. I kind of liked Glasgow, too.

Are you talking about the wedding of the cute little redheaded chick? I'll probably be going to that one... :)

It can't be too much worse than Boston, is it? I have a fabulous down coat and goretex books that usually get me through the winter here. Although I just remembered how little daylight it will get. Bleah.

Yes, that's the wedding I'm talking about! I'm sure it will be fabulous, and I'm so glad people are planning to go!
