My soon-to-be-six-year-old niece is having a pirate birthday party this year. Any of my chlit or librarian friends happen to know of a good read-aloud pirate picture book for my sister to read at the party? Thanks!

Ooh! Ooh! There's a new one! It has little biographies of women pirates throughout history!

(Checks Google cuz memory is small and things fall out.)

It's great, although maybe a bit old for a six-year-old crowd? Not that I want to say anything against it! I was at Charlesbridge when they were preparing to publish it, and I remember being v. excited about it. :)

I love the Sheep in a Jeep books -- didn't know about that title, but if it's as funny as the other ones I've read, it would be AWESOME for a read-aloud at a six-year-old's b-day party, I would think!

I have nothing to recommend. I just want to say how fucking cool it is to be part of a social circle that can respond to this so enthusiastically.

This one just flew off the shelves when I worked at Borders: How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long and David Shannon (and its sequel, Pirates Don't Change Diapers)

Roger, the Jolly Pirate by Brett Helquist (illustrator of the Series of Unfortunate Events)

And I haven't read this one, but a reviewer quoted a line that goes: "Do Pirates Have Birthdays? Of course they do--with presents and games and lots of soda pop. The cook makes a cake with doubloons inside and a skull-and-bones on top." (Of course the cake is bright pink with a happy skull and bones on top.)

Actually I suppose a 6yo would probably find that boring. Just read "pirate book" and thought of it... :)

I gave my niece "The Barefoot Book of Pirates" - it's for an older audience, but wonderful stories. There's a short story called "Pirate Grace" about a girl pirate. My 5 year old niece (and younger nephew and niece) love it, even if you need to read it to them! Check it: Barefoot Books

They have a store on Mass Ave outside of Porter on the way to Harvard. On a corner on the left.
