I think you mean "TEMPING Fate," not "TEMPTING". I enjoyed that much, in precisely the way I expected to enjoy an Esther Friesner YA about a teenage girl who gets a job temping for the Fates. It was a lot of fun.

Oh, can I assume Children of the Dust Bowl was because of my rec? Wasn't it gripping? I must read some Steinbeck, stat.

If you liked that, I'd also strongly, strongly recommend Ellen(?) Partridge's biography of Woody Guthrie, "This Land Was Made for You and Me." I gave this to my dad, an old folkie, for Christmas (signed!), and I was thrilled that he loved it even though it was a children's book. It was gripping, horrifying, utterly fascinating. ... Yeah.

Oh, and I just saw the Friesner! I used to be a big fan of her stuff. (I'm not against it now, or anything, I just have too much else to read.) I particularly liked her Gnome Man's Land trilogy, which anticipates Gaiman's American Gods motif by howevermany decades. Even though I don't actually think Gaiman stole anything from her, I still find myself wanting to bring up her name whenever anybody waxes about the brilliance of the concept because she did, after all, do it first.
