I'm so proud of myself -- I could read the Hebrew! (I don't know all the letters, but I do know the birthday song.)
Off-topic: we went to the Tenement Museum the other day. They have two tenement apartments set up to look like they would have around the turn of the century, and they talked about what the people did for a living (one family made dresses, and the sewing machine was all set up and there were pink dress pieces everywhere). These were actual families they researched, with names and a specific number of children, and who came from a specific town in Eastern Europe... in one of the apartments they had talked with one of the sons of the family, and he remembered where he and his siblings slept (the two girls on a cot and four boys on a sofa). And they showed up photos of some of the people (I can't imagine how many hours it took to earn enough money for a portrait).
Anyhow, one of the families came from Lithuania, but once they'd been in New York for a few years, they decided it would be better if they had a German-sounding last name, so they started calling themselves by a name that you happen to share.
