Greetings from New York! Yesterday I did a walking tour of Lincoln Square in the morning, then tried to get tickets to Shakespeare in the Park for the evening. They were sold out, but I had brought a ipcnic blanket and my lunch with me, so I found a nice spot in Central Park to have my lunch and relax for a while. That was pleasant but not quite relaxing enough, so I went back to the Y to grab a nap. Several rounds of napping and reading later, I awoke at 10pm, and wandered out for some dinner. I ended up at Ellen's Stardust Diner in Times Square, a kitschy fifties diner where the wait staff sings, which was entertaining. Walked through Times Square for a bit, then back to the Y.

This morning I got up and started wandering uptown in search of bagels, but accidentally stumbled over the Green Flea Mare had mentioned just before it opened. I spent a few hours happily shopping there; the best part was finding a guy who does letterpress on the spot, so I had him do some business cards for me just so I could learn about letterpress. Sexy stuff, that. Some of his other clients came by while we were chatting and working, and a local designer friend of his gave me some pointers ont he field and exchanged cards with me.

Now I'm back near Times Sq waiting to meet guxx for some kosher deli. Yum! Tonight it's Avenue Q, and tomorrow the wedding on Far Rockaway. I hoipe the weather holds, it's really lovely today -- warm and sunny but not too hot or humid. Hope y'all are having a great weekend too.

I'm glad you're having such a wonderful time, and you found the GreenFlea! I heart New York!

How is the Y as a place to stay? Do you have your own room? And more importantly, what does it cost?

The Y is ok. I have a private room, shared bathroom down the hall (with a push-button lock, for security). Last time I did this, a year ago, it was $50/night -- this time it's $75, but I don't know if that's the normal rate or if that was because of the holiday weekend. The room is small, the bed is hard, but the location is great -- 63th and Central Park West, right near Lincoln Center, an fairly easy walk to Times Square. I had thought about trying one of the other hostels I found online, but when I did more searching on them I found reviews that said they were scary. Oh, and you get access to the Y facilities, like the gym, pool, and sauna, if that matters.

I heart New York, too

Although I haven't really been for many years. Glad you are having a great time. I'm looking for easy, inexpensive ways to get back to NYC. What's new and fun these days?

Well, the Greyhound bus is only about $30 round trip these days -- if you can deal with the 4.5 hour trip, that certainly makes going less painless. I've olnly started going myself in the past few years, so I don't know what's new, but every time I go I seem to find some cool museum or tour or restaurant or show or something that makes the trip worthwhile. Even just wandering around Central Park can be fun. Yesterday I ended up going out on a rowboat on the lake in the park with my friend Ari, who was in from Boston for the day, and a friend of his.

That's awesome that you're enjoying the city. It's funny, when you're from NY, you never do the tourist things. It's only when I have guests that I actually just walk around the city & take the sights in.
