gilanaThe trip so far:
Friday was spent napping, walking into Old Town and wandering around, and napping some more. The synagogue experience turned out to be both more and less complicated than I had expected. By the time services were starting, my suitcase had not yet arrived, and I was left wearing my jeans. I decided to go over see if I could find someone to talk to outside, explain the situation, and see what came from there. I found a woman outside looking for the 10th for a minyan and told her; she pointed out that I was wearing a long coat, and brought me in. The women's section was a small room off to the side with a shuttered window looking in to the men's section. They were very nice about opening the window wide for me, and seemed very welcoming. Services were almost exactly the same as home, tunes and all. After services, it turned out that the rabbi had completely forgotten that I was coming, but since he didn't have any other guests coming he couldn't invite me -- it would not be appropriate for a man to have a female guest alone. He did ask to make sure that I had enough to eat, and of course I said that I did. So I went home and had a Cliff Bar for dinner. But really, I was so tired by that point that I didn't mind at all, and I really wasn't upset about the experience. We'll see, maybe I'll try again next shabbos. The suitcase finally did arrive around 9pm, and luckily the maid helped me to shlep it up the tiny winding staircase to the third floor where my room is.
Today I got up around 8 and had a nice breakfast at the B&B (complete with toast in a toast rack), then went out to wander. The Royal Museum and the Museum of Scotland (The Royal Museum was designed to show the world to Scotland; the Museum of Scotland, to show Scotland to the world) are free, and only about 20 minutes walk from my B&B, so I went there and spent about three and a half hours checking it out. At 11:30 they had a highlights tour of the Museum of Scotland, so I got lots of the interesting stories that you miss just wandering around on your own. By 1:30, there was still more to see, but I was hungry and tired, so I walked home, had the bread and cheese I had bought on Friday at a Tesco's, and had a nap. And now shabbos is over and I'm out and about again, looking for some dinner and entertainment.
Mare, I've booked a Haggis Tour of the highlands for Wednesday -- can't wait!
