Hooray! Congrats! Gybes can be scary - I've found on smaller boats the best way to manage them is to sheet in until I'm close to accidentally gybing, grab the boom and give it a shove over, sheeting out after the main takes up the slack. The SLAM over of a fully let out main is nasty...

I'm not sure if this is 'by the book' - but it's what I learned on Da Big Boats, where a gybe like that can dismast the boat (by snapping the standing rigging).

Jibsheets are wonderful - wait til you fly your first spinnaker :)
