My medical insurance through my company has run out. Ive been expecting a COBRA packet in the mail; I got one for dental, but not medical. Just called to find out what was up, and apparently this company does not offer COBRA in MA & NH, due to something about domestic partner issues. Pigfuckers. I know MA has some health coverage for the unemployed, guess I have to go look into that now. Betcha *that's* going to be fun...

Not enirely sure about the expensive part- COBRA can be wicked fucking epensive, and it's often cheaper to just buy directly from Blue Cross. But gilly should look into MSP, because my understanding is that you apply for MSP, get rejected and can then apply for Commonwealth Care. I ended up actually being covered by MSP, which I found surprising.

Same here -- as long as I was officially unemployed, my health care was totally covered by MSP, no cover pay, and the quality of coverage was even decent. The problem, I think, is when you get some temporary work for a couple weeks and then are unemployed again. Honestly, the system is so messed up with all the paperwork involved with any changes, it's like they punish you for working. (And I was working as an adjunct teacher, which meant a lot of switching back and forth from employed to unemployed, changes with every semester.) Glad that's all behind me... the way people describe it makes it sound like it's even worse now because the system is totally overloaded.

So yeah. Pigfuckers. The only comfort I can offer is that as much of a hassle as it will undoubtedly be, you probably will save money. Assuming they haven't revamped the system since I last dealt with it, anyway.

You know what, I'm not sure my memory is accurate here. It's possible that dealing with MSP was actually less difficult than dealing with most other aspects of unemployment. All the things I'm recalling that were sucky paperwork-swamped messes seem to be related to either DUA or Commonwealth Care -- can't think of any real problems I had with MSP. But it's been a while.

*HUG*

I know people who work for Commonwealth Care if you have trouble with it.

I'm so sorry. This is really crappy. Please let me know if there's anything I can do. If you run into troubles I will happily see what I can do to work the system and help avoid as much red tape as possible.

massive suck... i thought that all employers in mass were required to offer cobra... other people are right, though, you may just be better off getting something direct from bc/bs or whomever...

That's really awful. If I can do anything to help with the research, let me know. I should do the research myself anyway. $400 per month is really expensive at the moment.

Huh? Isn't COBRA a federal mandate covering any company in any state that offers health insurance benefits?
