Dinner tonight was a grilled cheese sandwich on fresh tomato bread from When Pigs Fly. I might have bought a loaf of their saurkraut rye, too, had they not been sold out. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] barodar for finally inspiring me to make it over there!

And on my way home I stopped in at Dave's Fresh Pasta and picked up some pasta to keep in the freezer, as well as some to eat in the next few days. They've also got some classes that sound pretty interesting, if I ever have the time. I wanted to try their wild mushroom cream sauce, but didn't think it would go with the spinach pasta I bought this time. Another time, perhaps. But they did have some mimolette, which is one of my favorite cheeses, so I splurged on a chunk of that.

And branching out to Porter… I stopped in the Porter Exchange to grab some dinner last night. Went in to the Kotobukiya market, but none of the flavors of onigiri they had left were really doing it for me. So I tried the sushi bar, but they only take cash and I didn't have enough on me (nor my ATM card, long story.) So I ended up trying the new Tavern in the Square. I had the pistachio-encrusted tuna salad, which had mixed greens, wasabi peas, crispy wontons, shaved cucumber, and citrus vinaigrette dressing. Not quite as fabulous as it sounded, but still damn tasty. I hear very good things about their maple sweet potato fries—will definitely have to go back to try those.

Anyone else have any local food finds to share?

Just a vote for going back to get sauerkraut rye sometime; I thought it was really odd-sounding, but turned out to be completely lovely.

Also, Taza chocolate, which is having an open house Saturday.

Or I could imagine a savory bread pudding with sauteed leeks, Emmenthaler, and more sauerkraut.

That place kicks all of the ass. Every bit.

There's a little Italian market just off of Davis Square on Highland that sells fresh sausages. Or at least used to when I lived in Davis several years ago. They're awesome.

And surely you must already know of Kick@$$ Cupcakes.

Oh awesome! Our favorite combos from Dave's Fresh Pasta are the butternut squash with alfredo sauce and the pumpkin ravioli with nutmeg cream sauce. I also liked the lemon parsley ricotta ravioli and the fresh (local!) mint pesto.

Also, I wholeheartedly agree with the title of the post... I think Davis Square is the best neighborhood I have ever lived in, period. So many awesome shops, restaurants, and hangouts -- theatre, films, other performances -- so much local color -- and I meet friends just about every time I walk down the street. It's kind of stunning, how much I love it here. I think it'll break my heart if I ever have to move more than a 10 minute walk away (although I admit the idea of off-street parking has its appeal on nights like tonight).

They're okay, but Lyndell's Bakery in Ball Square has rather larger, equally delicious cupcakes for 90¢ instead of $3... I'm not particularly down on Kick@ss, and they certainly have inventive flavors and combinations, while Lyndell's pretty much sticks to your basic chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry (and I LOVE Kick@ss's local milk and vanilla bean shooter) -- but as baked goods go, Lyndell's gives you a lot more bang for your buck.

I live pretty much smack dab in between them so I visit both...

Davis Square has certainly changed since we lived there 30 years ago! All we had then were the original Steve's (now Herrell's) ice cream with its mile-long lines even in winter and the original Bertucci's with a bocce court in the basement. (Didn't know why, until researching for this response, Steve's ice cream became Bertucci's in the early 1980's at the same location.) Had we been able to look into the future, perhaps we would have bought the two family we were renting when the owner offered it. Alas - we couldn't afford it then.

I know I've mentioned it before, but I can't say enough good stuff about Good Food Cafe, on Mass Ave right off the bike path. Good food, good ingredients, super friendly people (one of the owners recognized me and said hello in the pet store the other day), and free wi-fi--what more could you want? Granted, their selection is small, but what they have, they do well.

Also, on the same block, Hana Sushi has improved 100% since they remodeled (and I believe got new management)--and they were good to start with. They've got the freshest fish I know of in Camberville, other than the restaurant in the Porter Exchange.

Mmmmm....My favorite Topic!

I completely agree with lordfeepness post about Good Food Cafe. Seriously, everything - sandwiches, soups, the Elvis smoothie (sigh) are AMAZING. And Hana Sushi is hands DOWN my favorite sushi place in the area. They make this juicy roll - which for all intensive purposes is kinda the whopper of sushis (complete with draped over cooked salmon and apple slices) and I DREAM of it!

Also, we now have Capone Foods on Mass Ave near Meacham. They have a wonderful selection of Fresh Pastas & complementary foods - and a great pasta /sauce pairing chart so you know just how to make your dinner fanTABulous. I could go on and on... Cafe Barada...Joses...Renees. I heart Camberville :)
