Too tired to post the details right now, but look what I made today! I took a class in wood type letterpress at Albertine Press. It looks a lot easier than it is... see the flickr set for some photos of the process.
Mostly making everything fit perfectly. And all of the blocks are different sizes and shapes, so you have to find juuuust the right size tiny space filler to make it all even.
Also, you have to block out each color bit separately, and make sure they line up properly.
*laugh*..i sold shelley one of her presses ! i've got a couple clamshell presses and a tabletop proofer (similar bed size but much smaller than that sexy beast of hers) and recent picked up some mighty fine wood type. i haven't done polymer plate work yet (`cuz the bases are so expensive). my shop is dark and dusty, but if you get an inspiration and need an outlet...
