Go to a Ben & Jerry's scoop shop from noon to 8:00pm and get a free ice cream cone.

Now that's a holiday I can get behind! And thank goodness it comes after Passover!

I've been seeing Peter Mulvey shows now for well over a decade. My Palm Pilot lists about ten shows going back to 1998, and I first met Peter playing in the subway somewhere around 1992, I think. I don't generally have a lot of patience for live music. There's not a lot to look at, nothing to do with my hands, and I often can't make out the words too well.

overtired rambling about a fabulous artist )

Anyway. I went to sleep way too late and I'm probably not too coherent this morning, but I wanted to share what a fabulous show it was. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] palmwiz and [livejournal.com profile] kalliejenn2 and [livejournal.com profile] dreams_of_wings for joining me. And if you have the time to go see Peter tonight at the Lizard Lounge or Saturday night at Johnny D's, go!

After all these years, Peter Mulvey still rocks my world. Sleep now, concert review tomorrow if I'm awake enough to write one.

This was a Good Weekend™.

Friday night there was a 20s&30s dinner at [livejournal.com profile] tremontstshul, always a pleasant event. Lovely to catch up with [livejournal.com profile] awhyzip and [livejournal.com profile] tapuz and [livejournal.com profile] laurens10 and all the others.

Saturday night was the Broadway Night at First Church. I'm reasonably satisfied with my performance in the duet; while my vocal performance was not all I could have hoped for, it was also not as bad as I had feared, and I think I managed to give an entertaining performance overall. ([livejournal.com profile] chanaleh, of course, was amazing and a joy to perform with. And [livejournal.com profile] heliopsis blew my socks off.) It was wonderful to see so many friendly faces in the audience -- I always enjoy performing more in front of friends.

After the show we went out to see The Corpse Bride to celebrate [livejournal.com profile] jmspencer's birthday, a movie I've been eagerly awaiting and certainly enjoyed. And then [livejournal.com profile] alfie1981 and [livejournal.com profile] ironpoet and I went back to his place and introduced her to the joys of Firefly.

This morning I woke up, made myself some cinnamon rolls and coffee that I enjoyed sitting out on the back porch (somehow I never think to go out there, but the smoke alarm went off baking the rolls so I opened the door to air out the kitchen and it looked so inviting outside.) Then [livejournal.com profile] derspatchel and I met up to go see Mickey Rooney and his wife Jan perform at the Regent in Arlington. Spatch is the only guy I know who would really get what it meant to see Mickey live. The show was an entertaining enough mix of song, video, and reminiscences, but really, just being in the presence of this tiny giant of a man made it all worthwhile.

Just getting home now from a lovely dinner with [livejournal.com profile] muffyjo, and there's a slim chance I may actually make it to bed at a reasonable hour tonight.

I went to a Brockton Rox game with Sully last night. It was pretty much the perfect summer night. We sped out with the windows open, music blasting, and the wind rushing through my hair. Got there just as the game was starting, and bought tickets that put us behind the Rox dugout, closer than I've ever been at Fenway, and on the aisle so we could easily make multiple trips for (kosher!) hot dogs and french fries and peanuts and beer (Sully) and root beer (me). The Rox got 8 runs in the first inning alone, so it wasn't much of a contest -- the final score was 14-2, although we left during the seventh-inning stretch -- but still fun to watch and cheer and boo the umpire and laugh at the sound effects and movie clips played over the loudspeaker. To my mind baseball is the perfect sporting event to attend; you have plenty of time to hang out and chat while still keeping an eye on the field for exciting plays.

The best part of the night, aside from the company of course, was K.O., the Rox's mascot. He's a boxing kangaroo, and he's got an awful lot of personality for a guy in a kangaroo suit. Kids and grown-ups alike were calling out for him to come over and visit with them. It is my fond hope to go back another game and get K.O. to sign my new Brockton Rox baseball cap. Go Rox!
