apartment update

AAARRRRGGGGHHH.

Talked to Charlie, the realtor for the amazing apartment again today. He said the place was still available, and suggested asking if the landlord would come down to $1350. I said let me talk to Anne first, he said no he might as well call Emad and ask. Emad said yes. Anne said no, that's still too much. She talked to Charlie, he suggested asking for $1300. Anne and I both hate asking him to come down, but Charlie says it's worth asking. He calls Emad, talks for an hour, now Emad is annoyed that we're quibbling over $25 a month and concerned that if $25 is that big a deal to us that something will happen and he won't get his rent. He's going to sleep on it and let Charlie know in the morning, but my gut says he'll say no. (My gut also says it's going to throw up, but I hope it's kidding about that part.) Shitshitshit. I wish Charlie had waited until I talked to Anne. I wish Anne had said yes to $1350. I wish I were independently wealthy. Oh yeah, and Anne talked to our current landlord on Monday and asked for more time, and he'll only give us until April 6; he has people scheduled to come in and gut the place after that. No pressure or anything. Bleah. Plus I'm taking off the week of Passover to visit my sister, so I won't get any pay that week, in addition to any time I have to take off to pack and deal. Luckily the one big project I'm working on right now should go to the printer Friday.

Tell Charlie that he muffed it by calling twice, to ask for two $50 drops, rather than the one $100 drop you would have wanted, had you spoken to Anne first. If he wants to make his commission, he'll find a way to convince Emad to sign the lease.

Remember who Charlie works for. He ignored your suggestion to confirm with Anne first and is now playing good-cop to Emad's bad-cop. Also, you're talking about $300 a year each, and while $300 may not be a lot to him it is to you. Finally, apartments don't disappear the way they used to; the rental market has softened noticeably and even if Emad hasn't noticed it you are probably not in any real danger of losing the place while you negotiate. If you can pretend to lose your temper with Charlie without losing your composure at the same time, now might be a good time to do that.
