The Dance Complex in Central Square was having an open house today, with free 20-minute lessons in lots of dance styles. I've been thinking about taking some tap lessons for years, so I thought I'd drop by for that bit. They were running late, so I got there are the beginning of the Irish dance class, started to sit and watch, then decided it looked like fun and jumped in. I picked up the steps pretty easily, and worked up quite a sweat (and really wished I were wearing a sports bra) but had fun.

Then came the tap class. I'm usually pretty good at picking up dance steps, but tap turns out to be unlike anything I've ever done before. I'm not used to having to pay attention to using heel vs toe, and I'm *terrible* about using my arms. I felt like an elephant. I've never sucked so badly at any kind of dance before. Except that's really not true, I think basically I was just average where I'm used to being good, and that's not easy for me. So I was going along and feeling bad about myself and getting all anxious, when the teacher told us to look in the mirror and pretend we were performing for an audience and have fun. I took a deep breath, pictured myself in fishnets and a top hat, stopped trying to do the extra little bits she had said were optional that were stressing me out, and just tried to have fun. Made it through the routine much better, and had fun doing it.

I think I'm going to sign up for a class in June. I have a tendency to not do things that don't come easily to me, but that seems kind of silly, and I think I'm cheating myself out of some fun stuff that way. Might be nice to have a forum to both get a little exercise and try to learn to lighten up on myself a little.
